How to read a WiFi QR code
- Choose Scan Image to upload a saved code or a screenshot, or Camera to scan a printed one.
- Read the network name and security type. The password is hidden until you choose Show, so nobody reads it over your shoulder.
- Type the details into your device, or use Copy next to the password.
When this is useful
A laptop, TV, games console or smart-home device often cannot scan a code, but the code holds everything it needs. Reading it here gives you the network name and password to type in. It also helps when you saved a WiFi code as a screenshot and no longer remember the password, or when you want to see which network a printed code on a wall would actually join before you scan it with your phone.
Only use it for networks you may join
A WiFi code is how a network's owner shares access. Reading one you were given is fine. This page only shows what is written in the code; it cannot find a password that is not there, and it does nothing to a network.
Open, hidden and older networks
A code for an open network has no password, and the page warns you that traffic on it can be seen by others. A hidden network is flagged, because your device must be told the name to find it. Networks using WEP are flagged as obsolete and easy to break.
Making a WiFi code for your own network
On many Android phones you can show a code for the network you are connected to from the WiFi settings, under Share, though menus vary by phone. You can also make one with the WiFi QR code generator, which builds the code in your browser so the password is never uploaded.
